Out This Week - 12th March 2012

The Delta Spirit - California

San Diego band The Delta Spirit have hinted in the past that they may be moving away from their Americana roots, not least with the storming alt-rock single 'Bushwick Blues' from 2010's 'History From Below' album. Stylistically similar but with an added dose of Beach Boys is the rather ace new track 'California' which is from their self-titled new album, out this week.

Grimes - Genesis

Canadian electro-dreampopper Claire Boucher released her latest album as Grimes this week, and the critics have been getting themselves all excited about it, so expect to see 'Visions' appearing in plenty of end of year album polls. If you like previous free track we posted, 'Oblivion', then you might like to check out another album cut 'Genesis', which sounds not unlike Kate Bush collaborating with Kraftwerk.

Hooded Fang - ESP

Hooded Fang are already pretty big news back home in Canada, getting nominated for their version of the Mercury Music prize. New album 'Tosta Mista' is out in the UK this week (having been released last year in their homeland) and will hopefully see their eclectic mix of styles go down equally well this side of the Atlantic. 'ESP' is melodic, 60s-influenced psych-pop. Grab it free below.

Future Unlimited - When It Calls

I suppose it's the done thing to compare synth-pop duos to Cut Copy, but Nashville's Future Unlimited are probably sick of the comparison. There are similarities, however their version is equally routed in 1980s post-punk electronica. They're playing SXSW this week and their EP will initially be available to buy from those gigs, but if you're not going then you can download 'When It Calls' here.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Cassolette - Stay Heavy/Two Candles

This sextet from Florida unashamedly describe themselves as "IndiePOP!, Twee, Jangle" on their facebook page and no further description of their sound is really needed. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea then don't be put off, as Cassolette are a cut above most others around, simply having better songs than the rest. You can download the two tracks from their superb new single below or pick them up on 7" from the ever reliable Cloudberry Records.
