Five For Free #62

My Best Fiend - Higher Palms

It's been five minutes since we've heard from a Brooklyn band, so let's start with My Best Fiend who have recently released their debut album 'In Ghostlike Fading'. It's a bit of a surprise to learn that they're signed to Warp Records, as this kind of euphoric indie/folk is more what you'd expect from labels such as Bella Union rather than the experimental electronica synonymous with Warp. Still, bloody good tune!

Lee Ranaldo - Off The Wall

Lee Ranaldo will be familiar to millions as a founding member of Sonic Youth and sometime Cribs collaborator, but on Monday he releases his latest solo album 'Between The Tides & Times'. It's a record that's already been on the receiving end of some critical praise and sees him shunning distortion for a more direct alt-rock sound, as heard on freebie 'Off The Wall'.

Severin - Factory Fodder

We recently reviewed 'High Shot' which is the new single from Severin's EP 'Everything Breaks' and will be hitting stores on Monday. Until then it's worth having a listen to non EP track 'Factory Fodder' which they're giving away free. It's more juddering, hypnotic electro-pop from a band whose music seems to get better and better with every listen. Definitely 'a grower', and definitely worth the wait.

Sauna - Wanting You

Denver band Sauna mix those regular bedfellows garage rock, 60s girl groups and lo-fi alt-rock to make familiar sounding ramshackle indiepop. Ragged, clattering and sweet, new track 'Wanting You' sounds a little bit like a female fronted Hunx & His Punx. There may be a lot of this type of stuff round at the moment, but if it sounds as good as this then who are we to complain?

Guy Capecelatro III - Girlfriends

'Girlfriends' is from the new album by US singer-songwriter Guy Capecelatro III. The album's titled 'North For The Winter' and contains 18 tracks of meandering laments that sounds like Granddaddy going acoustic or Neil Young collaborating with Mercury Rev. If you like this free track then be sure to check out the whole thing as there are 17 more where this came from!
